Some Q signals that never quite made it.

(Thanks to fellow CHR member VE7KWK for submitting the chuckle of the day)
Some Q signals have never made it to the ARRL’s official list. Here are
some that many agree would be useful in appropriate situations. As with regular Q signals, each
can be a statement or a question, depending on whether a question mark follows it. Continue reading

My Digital Weekend

January hasn’t been to kind to me.  I have been plagued with this stomach flu going around and I just can’t seem to get over it.  Radio has just taken a back seat.  From the propagation reports either off the Internet or talking to other local hams they said conditions were bad and I wasn’t missing much. Deploy Anywhere Vertical

Came across this interesting video by Cliff (N4CCB) on a vertical antenna that can be used anywhere.  Although Cliff’s main intention in this video is for portable use in parks, SOTA etc. it got me to thinking about antenna challenged folks.  Although 40m might be too long in length For some, most should get 10 to maybe 30m.   Continue reading

SOTA 6m QRP – VK2 to ZL1 2340 km at 5 watts

Get out of the Radio Shack and Live Life

Thursday 10 January 2017, Andrew VK1MBE and Andrew VK1AD activating SOTA peak Mt Budawang VK2/ST-015.  Surprising success at working ZL1 on 6m 50.120 MHz at 5 watts QRP SSB, that’s right not CW or digital modes, yep voice mode SSB from SOTA summit Mt Budawang VK2/ST-015 for two ZL1 QSOs over 2340 km (1454 miles).   Mt Budawang is 37 km inland from the Tasman Sea.

My 6m gear:  Yaesu FT-817 at 5 watts, antenna is a homebrew 1/2 wave coaxial vertical supported by a 6 meter telescopic pole at 1137 metres above sea level (ASL)

Here is a link to an audio recording (7 minutes) of two QSOs from Mt Budawang, one after the other at 01115 and 0121 UTC.  The first QSO is with Dave ZK1AKW at Tauranga followed by Warren ZL1AIX near Auckland.   🙂

BCQP 2017 is coming up in just a few weeks. Please give a gentle reminder to club members so that they can prepare if they haven’t done so already. And SRI if I’m duping you in the mailout. I’d rather dupe you than have you left out of the loop! Continue reading

K7AGE and the BITX-40 transceiver

I’m in the process of putting together the older version to what Randy is showing in this video.  Guess I should have waited since the display would have been a welcomed addon for me.  Randy received his in 17 days I believe he said and I received mine spot on the 21 days they said it would take.
