(Editors note: fellow CHR member VE7HRA once again is on his annual adventure to the south and his visits to the hamfests. He files the following report)
Oh what to do to get out of the cold BC winter?
Well let’s just head south and see what we can do that is ham related.
Ah, Quartzfest, the third week of January. Let’s dry camp in the middle of the Arizonia desert for a week. 6 miles south of Quartzsite Az. Pull of Highway 95 follow the signs and look for all of the RV’s with strange antennas sticking up. A week camping with lots of like minded folks. Seminars, demo’s, campfires, hobo stew, cast iron cooking, a hootenanny, meeting old friends and a Saturday early morning swapmeet. What could be better.
There are no services, so bring your camper, tent or sleep in your car for the week. All of this has been done with not a lot of problem, just think it out.
This year was not warm as past years. Plenty of wind and very cool temps for the week. Next year will be back to normal warmth!!
Off to Palm Springs now. A couple of weeks in a campground hooked yo water, electricity and sewer. My YL was very pleased with that. Hot showers and the temperature got nice and warm. Shorts and tee shirts.
Off to the Desert Rats swap meet. This year it was held at the Palm Springs plant museum. Nice warm day to wonder around and look at the outdoor swap meet. Lots of old radios bits and pieces. Commercial vendors inside with some interesting products to look at. And now vintage airplanes.
The next week off we went to Yuma. It was the 17th annual Yuma Hamfest at the Yuma Fairgrounds. Thursday afternoon into the fairgrounds and set up the RV. Friday at half past dark out we go with the flashlights look for more treasures. Lots out tailgaters outside. Noon the doors open for the inside commercial vendors. The weather did not stay warm and dry this year. Saturday morning along came the rain. Not good for the outside folks. Oh well some of them moved of to a covered area, but there was a cool breeze. A great time though.
Now off to Apache Junction and the Scottsdale hamfest next week. Something to look forward to in the Phoenix area.
This year the weather has been different just like at home. But it is warmer and drier for the most part
